    Chelsea vs Manchester United
    Premier League
    Venue: Stamford Bridge
    Kick-off: 12.30pm BST, Saturday October 20

Premier League football returns with a bang this weekend, and the first match of gameweek nine starts with a blockbuster at Stamford Bridge .

Jose Mourinho and Manchester United begin a testing run of fixtures with a trip to Chelsea, with his former side looking to defend their unbeaten start to the season under new manager Maurizio Sarri.

United secured a thrilling and dramatic 3-2 comeback against Newcastle before the international break, but Saturday’s clash will go a long way to determining whether that was the spark that inspired an upturn in form, or merely a flash in the plan.

Mourinho and Sarri will speak to the press today at their respective conferences, and we’ll bring you the latest team news as and when we get it.

We’ll be present at both press conferences today and tomorrow’s match at the Bridge, so stay tuned for all the build-up…

James Robson’s report from Carrington as Jose Mourinho welcomes back three players from injury.

Jose Mourinho claims Manchester United have suffered ‘important injuries’ during the international break – but has been boosted by Luke Shaw and Nemanja Matic both being declared for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.

Marcos Rojo is also in contention to play for the first time this season, while Ander Herrera is available after an ankle injury.

But Mourinho suggested there were deeper fitness concerns ahead of his return to Stamford Bridge in what is a must-win game for United.

“The squad shape is that everybody available is selected,” said the United manager.

“Some came back in good condition and the happiness of some good results. Some came back with injuries, injuries that we were aware of when they happened and the national teams were correct in sending the boys back.

“We also had surprises with players that we had no idea that they were injured and they arrived with important injuries.”

Shaw is back despite pulling out of the England squad for the games against Croatia and Spain after sustaining a knock in United’s 3-2 win against Newcastle just before the international break.

Matic was also a doubt for the game against his former club when being sent home by Serbia to receive treatment for a back injury – but is available.

But the biggest surprise in United’s travelling party for the lunchtime kick off against Chelsea was Rojo, who has been out since suffering injury for Argentina at the World Cup.

The centre back then suffered a further setback when limping out of his comeback game for the under 23s last month.

Another returning player is Herrera, who has recovered from an ankle injury sustained last month.

“He trained two days but, with the situation we have, is one step forward and he’s ready to help us,” Mourinho added.

Meanwhile, Mourinho has revealed his frustration at the timing of the latest international break – coming after United’s morale-boosting win against Newcastle.

He immediately had to watch the majority of his players join up with their national teams at a time when he wanted to build on the dramatic comeback against Rafa Benitez’ side.

“I felt that after the match (there was a change of attitude),” he said. “It looks an eternity – they go and they come and they come back step by step and even today we don’t have every player back.

“So it is a bit strange when you come from the international week, but I think the feelings of the last match remain so the players are fine, are happy and focused on the match.”

Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic and Marcos Rojo are all in contention to face Chelsea after overcoming injury.

The trio were part of United’s travelling party on Friday afternoon as they boarded a train for London.

Shaw had to withdraw from the England squad for the games against Croatia and Spain after picking up a knock in the 3-2 win against Newcastle.

Matic was sent home by Serbia with a back problem, while Rojo hasn’t played all season after picking up an injury at the World Cup and then hobbling out of his comeback for the under 23s last month.

Sarri slams ‘disgusting’ online abuse of Carney

Maurizio Sarri has condemned the online abuse that Chelsea Women captain Karen Carney received this week as “disgusting” and unacceptable.

Carney was targeted on Instagram by a user unknown to her, who sent her rape and death threats during Chelsea Women’s round of 16 first-leg Champions League clash against Fiorentina on Wednesday in which the midfielder scored a match-winning penalty to secure a 1-0 victory for the Blues.

The Football Association released a statement on Thursday saying they were “appalled and dismayed” by the abuse and urged the police to tackle “this growing problem”.

    Photo: Reuters

Chelsea also condemned the abuse that Carney, 31, received and Sarri has now done the same telling reporters at Cobham: “I think, first of all, I watched the last match against Fiorentina. She’s a very good midfielder. I think, she scored.

“About the situation, what can I say? It’s not acceptable. It’s disgusting. I don’t know what else to say.”

When then asked if social media abuse to both female and male Chelsea players was an issue he was concerned about, Sarri replied: “I don’t know. I’m not used to using (social media).

“I think you can use social media, but only for working. Not for socialising. I have a problem to speak with my friends on the phone because I like very much to speak to them face to face, to have dinner together.

“So I don’t know what to say. It’s not my world. I don’t know.”

A spokesperson for Instagram confirmed the account that sent the three abusive messages to Carney has been removed while the Metropolitan Police said it “takes allegations of threatening and abusive behaviour very seriously” and encourages victims to come forward with their stories to allow investigations to be carried out.

Jorginho can help Kante get forward more – Essien

Chelsea legend Michael Essien believes N’Golo Kante will benefit from the arrival of Jorginho at Stamford Bridge because the World Cup winner now has the chance to improve the attacking side of his game.

Kante has been an integral member of Chelsea’s midfield since signing from Leicester City in 2016, following up his Premier League success at the King Power Stadium with another top-flight title win with the Blues and also an FA Cup victory last term too.

Kante also played a key role as France won the World Cup in Russia this summer but, since returning to Chelsea, the 27-year-old has seen himself shifted from a holding role onto the right of Maurizio Sarri’s three-man midfield due to the arrival of Italy international Jorginho.

The move paid off quickly as, during Chelsea’s first game of the season away to Huddersfield, Kante scored the opener as the Blues won 3-0.

And Essien, who spent nine years at Chelsea, believes Kante’s different role under Sarri will be “good” for the Frenchman because it will allow him to score more goals.

Speaking exclusively to Standard Sport, Essien said: “Anywhere that you put N’Golo, he will play.

“Like you said, he’s playing on the right and he’s getting in the box quite often, which last season he didn’t because he had to stay and protect the back four.

“Now that Jorginho is there, he’s given him more freedom to go forward which is good for him. He can score a few goals hopefully!”

Jorginho has enjoyed a seamless start to his Chelsea career after signing from Napoli in July shortly after the Blues announced the capture of Sarri from the Italian club where the pair worked together for three years.

The 26-year-old midfielder has started every game under Sarri, apart from Chelsea’s League Cup triumph over Liverpool, and has scored one goal so far this season.

And Essien is not surprised that Jorginho has adapted quickly to the Premier League, saying: “I’m not surprised because he worked with Sarri at Napoli and I played against him a few times.

“He’s such a good player and he really knows the manager well. When you know the manager, it makes things easier for you.
“He’s such a clever boy, and clever player. Everyone can see that. He’s enjoying his football.”

Chelsea remain unbeaten under Sarri this season, with the Blues currently sitting in second place and level on points with leaders Manchester City and Liverpool.

While results have been positive so too has the playing style under Sarri due to the Italian’s preference for an attacking 4-3-3 system, which has allowed the likes of Eden Hazard to enjoy more freedom on the pitch.

And Essien added when asked about Sarri: “You can see he’s a good manager. The team is playing well so there’s no need to change the system.

“It [the 4-3-3] is one of his best systems and they are very good at it.”

    Sarri’s passmasters

Sarriball has taken over the Premier League. In fact, Chelsea have dominated possession to the extent that they have completed the most passes of any team this season (5,728) – just ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The key cog in the passing machine is Jorginho, Sarri’s lieutenant and midfield general. The Italy international has made the most passes (853) and had the most touches (931) of anyone in the Premier League this season.

    Photo: Getty

Every move runs through him and it’s no coincidence that he is yet to taste defeat in a Chelsea shirt.

Manchester United have been renowned for dominating possession in the post-Ferguson years but have struggled at times to make it count in front of goal. But even they have had 1,400 fewer passes than Sarri’s Chelsea.

Here’s an injury update from James Robson at Carrington:

Jose Mourinho was vague about United’s injury list, with Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard all doubts before or during the international break.

He told MUTV: “Some came back in good condition and the happiness of some good results.

“Some came back with injuries, injuries that we were aware of when they happened and the national teams were correct in sending the boys back.

We also had surprises with players that we had no idea that they were injured and they arrived with important injuries.

“The squad shape is that everybody available is selected.”

Luke Shaw signed a new five-year contract this week and Jose Mourinho has praised the full-back for fighting for his Manchester United future.

“In the difficult moments when he was not selected, not playing regularly, he was always saying: ‘I want to play for you, I want to play for United. I’m going to make it.’ He faced the process in a brave way,” Mourinho said.

“He arrived [for pre-season] in a much better condition. Then, from the tactical point of view, I think he’s absorbed all the information, all the work we’ve done over the past few years.”

Mourinho given more time to respond to FA charge

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been given an extension until Wednesday to answer a charge from the FA following the victory over Newcastle, writes James Robson.

The United manager spoke into a camera in Portuguese after his side came from behind to triumph 3-2 at Old Trafford and had initially been given until Friday to answer the charge.

Asked at a press conference on Friday whether the charge was another example of the ‘manhunt’ against him and his team he spoke about earlier this month, Mourinho said: “If I answer your question I have probably another process because I cannot imply bias.”

Mourinho could potentially face a touchline ban but that would not have applied to this weekend anyway, when United face Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The match against Newcastle began with reports of Mourinho being sacked only for United to turn a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 victory in a potentially season-turning moment.

The international break could potentially stall their momentum, and Mourinho said: “I felt that after the match. Then it looks an eternity. Even today we don’t have every player back. It’s a bit strange. But I think the feelings of the last match remain.

“The players are happy and focused on the match.”

Mourinho to respect Chelsea fans despite expected hostile reception

    Photo: Getty

Jose Mourinho has vowed to respect Chelsea – even if his former fans turn on him at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, writes James Robson.

The Manchester United manager has been dubbed Judas by the supporters who used to idolise him – and he is expecting another fiery reception when he returns to West London.

But Mourinho, who famously responded to goading from Chelsea fans two seasons ago that ‘Judas is still number one’ – insists he will keep his emotions in place, regardless of the result.

“For me it is another game,” he said. “Would I celebrate like crazy my team goal at Stamford Bridge or my team victory at Stamford Bridge? I don’t think so. I think I would try to control myself and to respect the stadium and the supporters that were my supporters and my stadium for many years.

“To do that should be something (when) I completely lost my emotional control, which is not easy. So I would think which stadium I am in, which public is in the stands. But apart from that it is another match for me.

“I want to do well for my team, players, support, I am 100 percent Manchester United tomorrow – no more space than respect for the stadium and the fans.”

Mourinho will be on the touchline tomorrow after the FA granted him an extension to respond to a charge of “abusive and/or insulting and/or improper” language in front of cameras after the dramatic 3-2 win against Newcastle earlier this month.

He now has until 6pm on Wednesday to decide if he wants to contest the charge.

Mourinho claimed after victory against Newcastle that he was the victim of a ‘manhunt’ by sections of the media, following reports he was due to be sacked regardless of the result against Rafa Benitez’ side.

Asked if he believed he was being victimised by the authorities over comments he is alleged to have said in Portuguese, he said: “If I answer your question I probably have another process because I cannot imply bias so my answer is no answer.”

Hazard isn’t the only Chelsea player whose future is up in the air. Andreas Christensen has made a public demand for first-team football or he will seek a transfer in January.

Sarri has responded to the Dane’s request:

“His father? I’m not interested. What can I say? In the first part of the season, David [Luiz] and Antonio [Rudiger] have played very, very well so it’s not easy to change.

“Also, in our last six matches, Christensen has played in three so for his father, Europa League it’s not important but for us it’s important.

“He’s young and he has to improve. But he’s a technical defender so he is suitable for me in my way of football and, in the future, he will be able to play very often.”

Is Eden Hazard going to stay at Chelsea beyond the summer? The Belgian has been talking quite openly about the possibility of moving to Real Madrid but has hinted he could stay.

    Here’s what Sarri said:

“It will be important if he will remain with us. But I think also he can win everything, including the Ballon d’Or, here without playing in Spain.

“If we win the Champions League and Belgium win the Euros, [he will do it] without going to Spain.”

The international break can always throw a spanner in the works for club managers and it seems Maurizio Sarri is no more fortunate than others.

Vaishali Bhardwaj has some injury news:

Sarri clearly seems annoyed at how many players have returned from the international break with issues.

The Chelsea manager says Ethan Ampadu has a “serious” problem while Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi have come back with minor issues.

Barkley, who has shone for both Chelsea and England in recent weeks, needs “one or two” days to recover.

    A change of fortune?

You don’t need to be a statistician to understand that Manchester United are underachieving so far this season.

After eight games in 2017-18, Jose Mourinho’s side were unbeaten, winning six of their first eight games, and were sat just two points behind the leaders Manchester City.

    Photo: Getty

This season has been a different story. Not only are the Red Devils down in eighth behind the likes of Wolves and Bournemouth, they’re seven points worse off. At this early stage in the campaign, it’s a worrying sign of how far they’ve fallen.

Their form is mixed to say the least. The 3-2 win over Newcastle before the international break only came after they went 2-0 down, and before that, Mourinho’s side lost 3-1 away to West Ham and were held to a 1-1 home draw against Wolves.

Now, Mourinho returns to the club where he won three Premier League titles and will undoubtedly feel like he has something to prove.

United haven’t won in any of their last eight visits to Stamford Bridge in all competitions and lost 1-0 in their last meeting in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. When Saturday evening arrives, Mourinho will be hoping to put an end to that dismal run.
